Newsflash

Research has shown that massage stimulates and awakens the body to restore health and well-being.  It also suggests that stress-reduction programs tailored to the cancer setting may help patients cope with the side effects of treatment and improve quality of life after treatment.  The use of massage therapy for cancer patients has become more common in recent years as a way to reduce pain, anxiety and nausea.

Referral Process

Inpatients may self refer to receive brief relaxation massage services.

Outpatients may self-refer for chair massage and full body massage offerings. Family members, caregivers or those in the community who have been touched by cancer may self-refer for either chair massage or for full-body massage services.  Patients must have a physician’s order to receive full body massage. We can help you facilitate this process for you.

Headaches and Biofeedback

Current estimations indicate over 50 million Americans are suffering from Headaches.  The headaches can be classified into 4 categories- vascular, tension, traction, and inflammatory. Treatment of choice for frequent migraine suffers is usually pharmacologic prophylaxis.  Avoidance strategies (loud noises, flashing lights, stress and some foods) also constitute a very important first line approach in managing migraines.  Biofeedback training with or without relaxation techniques have also been shown to be effective in treating migraine and tension headaches.

In particular, thermal biofeedback training has been shown to be effective in treating migraine headaches.  This technique teaches patients to increase the skin temperature of their fingers.  Supposedly, dilation of the peripheral blood vessels in the hand is associated with reduced blood flow in the regions of the supra-orbital and superficial temporal arteries, although the exact mechanism by which thermal biofeedback improves migraine headaches is still unclear.
